~A look ahead to Del Mar…
Del Mar opens next Thursday, July 17. This year Del Mar will offer a renovated turf course. The course was widened and the chute’s sharp turn on to the main part of the course was significantly softened. Something to note for this year’s race season. The new, 80 foot wide course was renovated in order to be considered as a host for the Breeders’ Cup and it looks like that paid off. Del Mar is now scheduled to be the 2017 host on November 3 and 4; a few years away but still exciting news.

~ If you can’t beat’em, join’em… The Calder–Gulfstream Deal
It was reported by several industry media outlets that Calder and Gulfstream made a deal in which Calder agreed it would not race year round and Gulfstream will run the racing operation at Calder. On Monday according to a Blood-horse article Calder has cancelled their big race day “The Summit of Speed” which was originally scheduled for the first Saturday in July. The next day Gulfstream indicated that it will run some of the races on July 5 and others would be on other days in July, but there is still more to be determined on purse, grade and even renaming the races. Two of the races were to be “Win & You’re In” races to earn a spot in Breeders’ Cup races. This will also have to be determined.

~ Breeders’ Cup Update… almost…
Everyone probably knows by now that the Breeders’ Cup will once again be hosted by Santa Anita in November this year. It was just reported at courier-journal.com on Tuesday, June 17 that the host of the Breeders’ Cup races for the next three years has been determined. An official announcement is expected by June 24. The courier-journal reports that it is Keeneland that is expected to make a formal announcement that it is the 2015 host of the Breeders’ Cup races. In addition the article states that Santa Anita will be announced as the host in 2016, and Del Mar will host in 2017. This will be the first time Keeneland and Del Mar will host these races.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s daytime programs are highlighted by a $100,000 Belmont stakes event, The Astoria and Tremont respectively. Six 2 year old fillies are ready for the Astoria. Expect more to follow soon on the new Stars & Stripes Day events at Belmont on July 5. Save the date. Six figure stakes will also be offered at Woodbine and Delaware on Saturday, but that’s not the best of it. The fun really heats up late in the day with Santa Anita offering The grade 1 $400,000 Shoemaker Mile and grade 1 $300,000 Vanity Stakes. In the evening Churchill will take charge (get it?) and offer a late 6pm post highlighted by the grade 1 $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap, grade 2 $200,000 Fleur De Lis, and two more grade 3 $100,000 events.

Will Take Charge has the starting high weight in the Stephen Foster on Saturday and it’s a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Classic Division race! Yes it’s that time of year. The first “Win & You’re In” was last Saturday. Palace Malice won his way into the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile with his win in the Met. Mile at Belmont. Revolutionary, Departing are also expected to compete in the Stephen Foster on Saturday.  As mentioned above the Tremont is at Belmont on Sunday, but some may say that Woodbine is the clear favorite with the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks Stakes and $150,000 Plate Trial. Monmouth offers the grade 3 $150,000 Pegasus.

HARNESS:
Welcome back Yonkers. Yonkers will begin racing again Friday, June 13 with twelve races after their brief regularly scheduled hiatus. The Friday 13th card at Yonkers will feel lucky indeed with across-the-board purse increases of approximately 15% on all overnight races. Not enough? It’s also an OTB Bettor Night. Free bets may print out with your wagers at any of our OTB branches. On the same night The Meadowlands will offer the $100,000 Meadowlands Maturity, a 4 year old open pace featuring Captaintreacherous.

On Saturday evening, the $1,000,000 North America Cup will be contested at Mohawk. There are ten starters in this one. McWicked gets post #2 and is the 7-2 favorite. Mohawk has an early 6:45pm special post time. Not enough? Mohawk’s undercard includes the $400,000 Fan Hanover Final (race 9), $325,000 Roses Are Red Final (race 7), $270,000 Armbro Flight Final, $225,000 Goodtimes Final and the $100,000 Gold Cup (race 8). There is a $50,000 guaranteed early Pick 4 races 4-7, race 4 post is 7:44pm. There’s also a $100,000 guaranteed All Stakes Late Pick4 in races 7-10, race 7 post 8:52pm, anchored by the North America Cup (race 10). In a word, “wow”.

California Chrome is back home at Los Alamitos and owner Stephen Coburn has publicly apologized for comments made after the race when his horse lost the Belmont Stakes and he lost his cool. For the record, it is probably agreed that Mr. Coburn lost his cool, but the issue of reconsidering the Triple Crown requirements was already a discussion. Back on May 19 after the Preakness the Baltimore Sun posted an article (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horse-racing/preakness/bal-preakness-stakes-2014-winner-california-chrome-equipment-might-be-an-issue-for-belmont-stakes-20140518,0,1565223.story) about the momentarily famous nasal strip issue or nasal-gate as some have joked. It was reported that “…some industry leaders – including Maryland Jockey Club president Tom Chuckas – have called for a more extended Triple Crown schedule.” It was noted that the California Chrome connections were already in favor of the idea. Trainer Art Sherman stated that it would encourage more horses to participate in the subsequent two races. Coburn also stated then that he believes horses not running in the Derby should not be eligible for the other two Triple Crown races.

Commissioner, runner up in the Belmont Stakes, was discovered to have a small chip in his front left ankle on Monday after the race as reported by Paulick Report on June 11, 2014. He’ll be out of commission till the Fall.

On Sunday, June 9 Paulick Report also posted that Beholder, who raced in Saturday’s Ogden Phipps, came out of the race with a deep gash in her left hind pastern. Beholder was 4th in that race. Her trainer, Richard Mandella, expects her to be sidelined for about six weeks.

Major Changes for the 2014 Belmont Stakes:

Belmont Stakes day will be a huge event this year with a thirteen race card, ten stakes races and over $8 million in purses including the $1,500,000 Belmont Stakes. Belmont Stakes day will now be North America’s second riches day of racing just behind the Breeders’ Cup Saturday card in November. Note, several purses have increased this year and several races have been moved to the Saturday Belmont Stakes day to make this happen, The Acorn, The Brooklyn Invitational, and the Jaipur Invitational.

Belmont has created a three day Belmont Stakes Festival in 2014. Featuring two two-day special Doubles on Friday, June 6 and this year there will also be racing on Sunday, June 8 including an all new turf, sprint stakes event for fillies.

Background on the Belmont Stakes Day:
California Chrome has won the first two legs of the elusive Triple Crown. Upon winning the Preakness Stakes on May 17 California Chrome became eligible to break the 36 year drought since Affirmed back in 1978.

~ Weekend Highlights…
On such a big Belmont Day it’s hard to think of anything else, but there is plenty of other racing this weekend.
Saturday’s wagering opens at 10am and Belmont’s card begins at 11:35am. Several Tracks have just recently changed their post times for Saturday to accommodate the big Belmont event. The latest changes are: Pimlico 12:45pm, Santa Anita 3pm, Pocono Downs –early card 11am and evening card 7:15pm. Please check the racing calendar for the full list of tracks for a total of 46 race cards on Saturday. I think that’s a record.

Santa Anita’s grade 3 $100,000 Affirmed Stakes is appropriately scheduled for Saturday. Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner, 36 years ago, back in 1978. Harness players will have several events of note today as well. The Meadows offers a $200,000 Pensylvania Sire Stakes (PASS), Hoosier offers eight Indiana Sire Stakes, and Mohawk features elimination races for the North America Cup, Fan Hanover, and the Roses Are Red.

See the complete Upcoming Weekend Stakes page for more details.

More at Interbets.com & OTB!

~ Weekend Highlights…
The big holiday weekend ahead is a time to honor our fallen heroes, cherish the freedoms they achieved for us all & celebrate our American way of life. Many of us will have a good old fashioned American barbeque at some point this weekend and OTB and Interbets.com will be serving up the stakes!!!  The long weekend is packed with stakes from tracks in New York to California and many places in between and beyond.

Belmont offers the Sheepshead Bay Stakes Saturday. Arlington offers three grade 3 $150,000 stakes. Remington offers the grade 1 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Stakes. How American is that?! Yonkers offers important pacing eliminations Saturday, the Art Rooney and Lismore. Sunday features Belmont’s $200,000 Wonder Again, two big stakes from our northern neighbors Woodbine Thoroughbreds, four stakes from Remington and much more.

Monday, May 26 is the official Memorial Day holiday. Belmont offers three six figure races, and Santa Anita offers the grade 1 $300,000 Gamely Stakes and grade 3 $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap just to name a few.

See the complete Upcoming Weekend Stakes page for more details.

~ Rainbow 6 Mandatory Payout on Memorial Day Monday…
Gulfstream Park reports that the Rainbow 6 has not been hit since January 10 resulting in a record carryover jackpot now at about $6 million. On May 10th Gulfstream announced that the Rainbow 6 jackpot will have a mandatory payout on Monday, May 26. If there is no single unique winning ticket through Sunday, May 25 then the total pool on Monday, May 26, Memorial Day, is anticipated to be over $10 million! Remember it’s just a .20 cent wager and the rules will change to a MANDATORY PAYOUT this day. Tell your lottery playing friends about this one too!

~ Plan ahead for The Belmont Stakes…
California Chrome has won the first two legs of the illusive Triple Crown. His biggest and final challenge is ahead on Saturday, June 7 in the Belmont Stakes. Upon winning the Preakness Stakes on May 17 California Chrome became eligible to brake the 36 year long drought. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed way back in 1978.

One minor bump in the road to the Triple Crown was smoothed out within a few days as reported by just about every racing media outlet out there. Apparently, trainer Art Sherman had to put in an application with New York racing officials requesting to use a nasal strip on California Chrome during the Belmont Stakes. Sherman never actually stated that he would not race without the strip just that it “might be a problem” because California Chrome wears a nasal strip while racing. New York already allows Standardbreds to wear nasal strips and according to Sherman nasal strips are permitted at racetracks “all over the country”.  New York racing officials have since granted the request and will now allow nasal strips at all NY tracks. We can all breathe a little easier now that the nose strip issue is behind us.

Belmont Stakes day was already shaping up to be a huge event this year with the changes that were made to the card. It will be a thirteen race card touting ten stakes races and over $8 million in purses including the Belmont Stakes with a purse increase to $1,500,000 this year. Belmont Stakes day will now be North America’s second riches day of racing just behind the Breeders’ Cup Saturday card in November. Contenders include Commanding Curve, Ride On Curlin, Wicked Strong, Samraat, Intense Holiday, Social Inclusion, Kid Cruz, Tonalist, and Commisioner. It was already announced that Danza will not be racing in the Belmont.

~ Going back to dirt…
Keeneland began a track renovation this week to convert the main race track from synthetic Polytrack material back to a new dirt surface.

Meydan Racecourse has had a synthetic surface from 2010-2014. It was reported in Paulick Report last week that Meydan will replace their synthetic Tapeta track surface with a traditional dirt track in time for the 2014-2015 racing season. Meydan Racecourse will host its twentieth Dubai World Cup in 2015.

PREAKNESS TIME & More at Interbets.com & OTB!

~ Plan ahead for the 139th Preakness…

~ FRIDAY WAGERING:  All OTB branches open by 11:45am, Pimlico’s first race post is 12 noon. Friday, May 16 offers the grade 2 $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan, the grade 3 $300,000 Pimlico and six more big stakes! There are 13 races total. The Black-Eyed Susan is Race 10, post time 4:47pm. The Pimlico Special is Race 12, post time 5:52pm. There is a two-day Pimlico Special/Preakness Double with a bet minimum of $1.00, and a two-day Pimlico Special/Dixie Stakes/Preakness Pick 3 with a bet minimum of .50cents. Bet each special wager as Race 1 on two separate cards.  You must wager by post time of the Pimlico Special, approximately 5:52pm for the Special two-day wagers. On Friday there is also a $250,000 guaranteed Pick 4 on Races 9-12. Race 9 post is 4:16pm. Advance wagering on the Preakness is available Friday, May 16.

Watch the live simulcast at all OTB locations plus Friday special television coverage on NBC Sports Network includes:
Preakness Classics 3-4pm and the Black-Eyed Susan live coverage 4-5pm.

~ SATURDAY PREAKNESS WAGERING:  All OTB branches will open by 10:15am. On Preakness Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014 Pimlico’s first race post time is 10:45a.m. The grade 1 $1,500,000 Preakness Stakes is Race 12 at 6:18pm. There is a whopping $1,500,000 guaranteed late Pick 4 in Races 9-12. Bet the late Pick 4 by Race 9, post 4:04pm. There is also an $350,000 guaranteed early Pick 4 on Races 5-8. Race 5 post is 1:10pm.

Preakness post positions were just selected on Wednesday, May 14. Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome drew post position 3 and is the favorite with morning line odds of 3-5. Social Inclusion (who didn’t get his chance to be in the Derby) drew post 8 with odds of 5-1. It looks like the early prediction is a two horse race with these odds. There are only two other Derby horses entered in the Preakness, General A Rod and Ride on Curlin. Both have jockey changes since the Derby. Ride on Curlin will now be ridden by Joel Rosario. General A Rod will now be ridden by J. Castellano. Calvin Borel now gets the mount on Ria Antonia. Ria Antonia, the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner, drew post 6 at 30-1. Jockey Rosie Napravnik now gets the mount on Bayern in post 5 at 10-1. Will these changes make a difference?! Pablo Del Monte will be in post 9 at 20-1. He pulled out of an opportunity to run in the Derby.

Watch the live simulcast at all OTB locations plus Saturday special television coverage includes:
Pimlico card coverage on NBC Sports Network 1-4:30pm. The action moves over to NBC-TV for Preakness coverage from 4:30-6:30pm, and then jumps back to NBCSN for post Preakness coverage 6:30-7pm.

More Preakness information here!   http://www.interbets.com/racing/otb/racing-schedule/kentucky-derby/

~ Weekend Highlights…
The weekend begins Friday with an early 11:45am opening at OTB for Pimlico’s 12 noon post time. The day begins with the Pimlico excitement and advance wagering on the Preakness all day and then Santa Anita will have a 6:00pm evening post time in the eastern time zone. Note, Hoosier Harness Track changed to a much earlier 1:00pm post time for this Friday.

Saturday offers a full day with an early 10:15am opening at OTB for Pimlico’s 10:45am post time. There are 49 tracks to bet on this Saturday besides Pimlico and the Preakness! Remember most tracks will adjust their post times today around the Pimlico card. Belmont has an early 12 noon post and Santa Anita is 2:30pm. BLUE GRASS & ARKANSAS DERBY at Interbets.com & OTB!

~ Weekend Highlights…
Saturday is highlighted by the last two big points Derby Preps. The Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is at Keeneland and the Arkansas Derby is at Oaklawn Park. Keeneland has a special early post at 12:35pm and a very full card with five big stakes races including the grade 1 $750,000 Blue Grass, two more grade 1 races and two grade 3s. There’s a guaranteed $300,000 all stakes Pick 4 and a guaranteed $300,000 all stakes Pick 5.

The entries are in for the Blue Grass and Medal Count gets the lucky 13 spot and 9-2 morning line odds. Bobby’s Kitten gets the #5 spot and 3-1 odds. Gala Award is all the way on the outside in the #14 spot, but proves that last is not least with a 5-1 morning line. Coastline (11) and Viceremos (12) both received 8-1 mlo followed by Harry’s Holiday in the #4 spot with 10/1. The points may play a key role in handicapping this one for a few runners. Coastline is only at 13 points now, so he needs this win in order to be in one of the twenty Kentucky Derby spots. Vinceremos and Harry’s Holiday both have twenty points and are in nineteenth and twentieth spots on the Derby card. Wins on Saturday may be needed to ensure their spots in May. The tension is on.

Watch & wager on Saturday’s racing live at an OTB near you. Stream it live on your PC or mobile device with your Interbets.com account. Additional special Blue Grass coverage will be offered in a live broadcast on FOX Sports 1 with coverage from 4:30pm-6:00pm.

Oaklawn has a special early post at 1:00pm and four big stakes races including the grade 1 $1,000,000 Arkansas Derby, grade 2 $500,000 Oaklawn Handicap, and two more $100,000 races.  Entries are in and the post positions are set with Tapiture favored at 9-5 morning line odds in post #3 in a field of nine followed closely by Strong Mandate with 9-2 mlo in that last #9 spot. Commissioner get #6 at 8-1 and Bayern is #8 at 2-1. The Derby points will be a factor in this race. Tapiture already has 42 points so he is likely in the Derby, but Strong Mandate and Commissioner both need a first or second place finish to earn enough points Saturday. As of now they have just 11 and 10 points respectively. Will this make a difference on Saturday? I guess we’ll find out. A few others, Uncle Sigh, Cairo Prince, and Candy Boy, who are not racing Saturday, should be starting to worry just about now that they may lose their spot in this year’s Derby.

This is the first Saturday of Gulfstream’s later 1:25pm post time. Yonkers offers harness fans the fourth leg of the $50,000 George Morton Levy Pacing Series.

All of New York is prohibited by law from horse race wagering this Sunday, April 13 because it is Palm Sunday. This rule also applies next Sunday, April 20 for Easter.

~ Win a trip to the Preakness…
Wagering customers at Interbets and OTB are eligible to win a trip for two to the 2014 Preakness just by playing the Pimlico Players’ Jackpot Pick 5 April 3-May3, New .10 cent minimum. The grade 1 $1,000,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct will offer the best-of-the-best the opportunity to earn their spot in the Kentucky Derby. The Gazelle is one of four Kentucky Oaks Preps Saturday. His trainer, John Sadler, was quoted as saying, “In his last race, we changed Kristo’s running style… and that probably was a mistake… and we think he deserves one more chance.”  Sadler also has Kobe’s Back as a possible runner in the Bay Shore. NY Bred Uncle Sigh is another possible runner in the Wood with Corey Nakatani confirmed on board once again. The unbeaten Social Inclusion arrived at Aqueduct on Monday and plans to run in the Wood. This will be his first start away from Gulfstream and third overall. Some more Derby contender insight may be gleaned by paying attention to the Wood Memorial this Saturday.

Watch & wager on Saturday’s racing live at an OTB near you. Stream it live on your PC or mobile device with your Interbets.com account. Additional special Wood Memorial coverage will be offered in a live broadcast on NBC Sports Network with coverage from 5:30pm-7:00pm. The Santa Anita Derby will be offered in this same telecast.

Santa Anita will also offer fans a $500,000 guaranteed lat Pick 4 Saturday for their big day highlighted by the grade 1 $1,000,000 Santa Anita Derby, another Derby Prep. In addition there are four more Santa Anita big stakes this day including the grade 1 $400,000 Santa Anita Oaks, a Kentucky Oaks Prep race.
