Today’s NY Hot List races to watch – SATURDAY October 25, 2014 at Belmont Park

By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A: A preferred horse to watch                         B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* – 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

3rd race – (7) Cease (an A last time) is an intriguing entry here off that huge effort last time when he set the pace for a winner that broke the track record. We liked this horse last time at 43-1 so why not here at expected value? Obviously faces tougher, but turnback to 7f may help the cause, and he gets a huge cut in weight. (6) River Rocks (B) looks like the one to beat off that excellent front-running try in the Kelso. (4) Salutos Amigos goes third off the layoff and should factor here off two-straight, triple-digit speed figs. (1) Confrontation flopped in a Grade 1, but field here is a little softer and he loved Belmont.

6th race – (2) Macagone (B) ran well last time even though he did not make the lead, dangerous if he can do that this time, but horse to his inside may have something to say about that. (1) Boston Strong is that horse and is eligible to improve off win, and while making just fourth career start. (10) Blue Pigeon has burned a boatload of money, but may have good conditions here for late-running style. (6) Changewilldoyagood closed strongly to win debut race and may get ideal pace setup here. (12) Iced Over (B) was up against it in the slop last time and should run better here.

8th race – (4) Margaret Reay (B) gave us a huge thrill at 50-1 in a Grade 3 last time and figures to fire best shot while going out third off a layoff. (6) Miss Chatelaine owns the fastest race, but she will have to prove it against winners. (9) Path improved smartly switching to turf last time and should be cranked up making third career start. (11) Ack Naughty won her debut and second-time starters for Chad Brown always seem to run well.

10th race – (8) Miss Matzoball (A) has moved forward smartly in both starts since the Spa debut, with big improvement coming on switch to turf last start. (10) Classic Aussie (B) is likely to run her best in third career start and should appreciate return to the grass. (5) Forma’s Joy should improve also back on the grass. (13) Hot City Girl figures to move forward in second career start for Linda Rice, assuming she draws in off the AE list.

Best bets: Macagone (6th); Miss Matzoball (10th); Best value: Cease (3rd); Margaret Reay (8th)
