Today’s NY Hot List races to watch  –  WEDNESDAY, April 23, 2014 at Aqueduct
By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A: A preferred horse to watch                        B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* – 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (2) Upward (a C last time) goes out for third straight win off the claim and last two races were good enough to be major player in this field. (6) Denzel looks like the horse to beat if he can just work out a trip. (3) Dedicated Deal could be a big overlay in here and should not be overlooked third off the bench. (1) Reserved Quality may be ready to win on turnback to 6 furlongs.

3rd race – (2) Sacred Ground (B) drops back to recent win level and is capable of running faster coming off a couple of wide journeys. (1) Rush Now and (1a) Street Thug comprise formidable entry with the former getting the nod on big class relief. (2) Moe Man drops to an all-time low for Chad Brown. (4) Mi Hijo always seems to compete, but is going out for ice-cold barn.

4th race – (1) Dapper Draper (A) just missed last race and figures to get jump on the field here from the inside post. (4) Letsfaceitjohnny (A) is interesting in that he was placed first in his career debut after interference in the stretch run so he faces winners today while never before crossing the finish line first.  That said, the horse that interfered with him last time won his next start so he would figure to have some ability and a forward move off the debut puts him right in the thick of things. (3) Stonehedge drops a notch after a career best last time. (2) Rap d’Oro (D) has had plenty of chances at this level, but is usually in contention and figures to be once again.

8th race – (5) Bileaps and Bounds (C) took a nice step forward last time and bullet work last week tells us she is ready for a big run here. (4) Wisdom of Oz (B) has been knocking on the door of late and could benefit if early speed duel develops. (2) Very Accomplished looks like the one to beat off two wins in a row. (1) Sheriffa has been off since November, but has faced tougher.

Best bets: Upward (1st); Dapper Draper (4th); Best value: Sacred Ground (3rd); Bileaps and Bounds (8th)

Today’s NY Hot List races to watch  –  THURSDAY, April 24, 2014 at Aqueduct
By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A: A preferred horse to watch                        B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* – 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

5th race – (4) Risk Control (an B last time) looks like an intriguing value play making third career start and the Giant’s Causeway filly should appreciate the stretchout on the grass. (8) Cloture looks plenty fast enough for these rivals coming back north for Shug. (1) Lady Lavery enters off a decent debut for McLaughlin who is excellent with maidens making their second career starts. (2) Al’s Gal made a nice forward move last time and is bred for turf routes. (9) The Right Bird (B) is a main-track-only entrant.

6th race – (8) Ed’s Magic (A) gets some class relief here and enters off a strong race when he finished third after getting hammered leaving the gate. (5) Mister Woolman doesn’t belong on turf and looks like a value play back on dirt while going out for a new barn. (7) Fly Bye Pomeroy needed that last race off a layoff and now drops to win level from two back. (3) Define drops to an all-time low, but is coming off a long layoff.

7th race – (2) Notacatbutallama is one of our favorites and he returns here from a winter nap against New York breds to which Pletcher rarely restricts him. (4) Pinball has won both his turf starts and faces perhaps the toughest field he ever has, but goes third off the layoff and just may be sharper than his top rivals. (6) Kharafa loves the Aqueduct turf and warmed up for this one with a Grade III try just three weeks ago in Florida. (5) Lubash is the most consistent performer in the field, but may need the race off a 5-month respite.

8th race – (6) Ultimate Empire (B) needed that last race off the layoff and we’re expecting a return to form at a nice price. (4) Groomedforvictory faces a little tougher here, but is in excellent form of late. (2) Sir Leslie (A) has been much improved since moving off the turf and last effort was especially good closing into a mediocre pace. (5) Sinistra put in a rare solid effort on the main track last time rallying stoutly while wide. (7) Bernardo has habit of hitting the board, but may need the race off a freshening.

Best bets: Ed’s Magic (6th); Best value: Risk Control (5th)
