Today’s NY Hot List races to watch – MONDAY September 1, 2014 at Saratoga

By Bob Ehalt and Shawn Rychling

Hot List Key:

A: A preferred horse to watch                         B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
* – 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

4th race – THE HOPEFUL, Grade I – (6) Competitive Edge (A) is hard to pick against after that romp of a debut victory 5 weeks ago.  He is by one of the top new sires and Pletcher has nursed him along for this start, five weeks after his debut. (4) I Spent It was extremely game slipping through on the rail to win the Special 3 weeks ago and the recent bullet work may mean he is sitting on a huge effort in third career start. (3) Requite (A) began his career with a solid victory at the Spa and is certainly eligible to move forward. (4) Signature Cat led all the way in his debut before the Pletcher ‘B’ team horse ran him down – but the speed figure was excellent.

6th race – (12) Monument Hill (C) drops to an all-time low and should be ready to roll for hot barn with concern being the wide post. (9) Which Market seems to underachieve, but faces a softer group here. (4) Live in Joy invades from Chicagoland and takes steep drop for Ramsey/Maker alliance. (6) Treasury Devil is back in straight claimers as Rodriguez tries to strike while iron is hot.

8th race – (9) Box Office (A) is in the bad habit of running second four straight times, but looks faster than these on his best day. (10) Successful Runner (C) has never been off the board and recent bullet work is a huge positive. (6) Harpoon removes the hood and goes back to dirt. Will this be enough to wake him up? (5) Classic Sense (C) broke his maiden with a career best in the mud last time and may get a wet track for this one. (1) Wizardly (D) enters off an improved effort over a muddy Saratoga track.

9th race – (1) Ring Weekend (B) enjoyed the switch to turf last time and should be ready to roll with a race over the course. (5) Storm steps up, but has won three in a row and has run much faster since switching to the turf. (7) Smooth Daddy faces by far his toughest test, but he appears to be the lone speed and if he gets away as easy as last time they’ll have to catch him. (4) Cabo Cat is rarely out of the mix, but his lone race here on opening day was mediocre. (8) Bashart has faltered since parting with Pletcher, but the recent barn switch is interesting and the Matz-Saez combo is profitable.

Best bets: Competitive Edge (4th); Ring Weekend (9th); Best value: Box Office (8th)
